We are at the time in the legislative session known as "crossover" when, if a bill has not been acted upon by the House, it will not become law. As a result, many of the larger policy bills are coming across my desk for consideration.
The House passed a $31 billion budget last week forcing us to look at the numerous revenue and spending options available to make up for the projected deficit. I voted to cut $511 million from the Governor's budget and to eliminate money for vacant state jobs. We also deferred spending on items that are mandated but must wait until better economic times are upon us. The House budget will continue to keep the lid on college tuition, provide health care assistance to the uninsured, fund additional education requirements as required by our state's education funding formula, and continue the funding for the clean-up of the Chesapeake Bay.

2008-2009 Scholarships
If you would like to be considered for the 2008-09 Delegate Lafferty Scholarship Program, please read about the scholarship application process, complete this scholarship application and submit it to Delegate Lafferty's office no later than April 17, 2008.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
You and your parents (if you are a dependent student) must be Maryland residents. This scholarship is available to students who live in the 42nd district and who will be attending a college, university or private career school in Maryland. The only exception is for students in the 42nd District who qualify for a “unique major” from the Maryland Higher Education Commission.
AWARD AMOUNT
The minimum annual award is $200. You may hold the Delegate Scholarship with all State awards. The total dollar amount of all State awards may not exceed your cost of attendance as determined by your school's financial aid office or $18,300, whichever is less. Funds may not be available to award all eligible students.
